USS Nimitz Deployed for Southern Seas 2026 Maritime Exercises
The USS Nimitz is heading to the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility to participate in the Southern Seas 2026 deployment. Accompanied by the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Gridley, the carrier strike group will engage in maritime exercises and subject matter exchanges with partner nations including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina. This mission, which marks the 11th iteration of the Southern Seas series since 2007, aims to bolster regional interoperability and demonstrate a continued commitment to stability within the Western Hemisphere. The deployment includes scheduled port visits to Brazil, Chile, Panama, and Jamaica, while providing regional observers a firsthand look at U.S. carrier operations.
This deployment follows a recent decision to extend the service life of the USS Nimitz until March 2027. Originally commissioned in 1975 and previously slated for decommissioning in 2026, the carrier remains a vital asset for the Navy’s global reach. The strike group, which includes Carrier Air Wing 17, brings significant air power to the region, utilizing F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and other specialized aircraft. The exercise arrives as the Pentagon continues to prioritize counternarcotics efforts in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean, where the military has conducted various strikes against vessels suspected of trafficking. By maintaining the presence of the Nimitz, the Navy ensures that its aging but capable flagship continues to support strategic objectives before its eventual retirement.
