U.S. Army Prepares to Field Compact XM8 Carbine as Part of Modernization Effort
The United States Army is expanding its Next Generation Squad Weapon program with the introduction of the XM8, a compact and lightweight carbine variant derived from the M7 rifle platform. Designed for enhanced maneuverability in confined environments such as vehicles or tight urban spaces, the new weapon shares internal firing components with the M7 and utilizes the 6.8 x 51mm round. Military personnel are scheduled to begin early testing of the carbine as soon as October.
This development marks a significant milestone in the Army’s multi-billion-dollar initiative to replace the aging M4 carbine and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon for frontline units. Over the next decade, the military plans to invest more than $7 billion to field these advanced systems, which include specialized optics and suppressors. The transition aims to provide infantry, scouts, combat medics, and special forces with modernized equipment capable of meeting evolving combat requirements. By integrating the XM8 into the broader squad weapon architecture, the Army continues its effort to standardize and upgrade the lethality of its close-combat forces.
