York Council Revokes Honorary Freedom Status from Sarah Ferguson Amid Epstein Controversy
City officials in York have officially rescinded the "Freedom of the City" honor previously granted to Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. The decision, finalized through a formal council vote, serves as a direct response to the Duchess’s long-standing personal relationship with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. While the title is purely ceremonial and carries no legal authority or practical privileges, the move represents a significant public distancing by the local government following intense scrutiny over the Duchess’s continued associations with Epstein well after his initial criminal conviction.
This action mirrors a similar measure taken by the council in 2022, when Prince Andrew, the Duchess’s former husband, was stripped of the same honorary title. Councillor Darryl Smalley emphasized that the council’s primary motivation is to uphold the city's reputation and moral standards, explicitly stating that the local government does not wish to be associated with individuals who maintain close ties to convicted predators. The revocation highlights the ongoing fallout surrounding the Epstein scandal and the persistent pressure on public figures to account for their historical connections to the disgraced financier. By removing these honors, the council aims to signal a clear disapproval of the associations that have sparked widespread public outrage.
