California Murderer Faces Capital Trial for Cold Case Killing in Florida

Demorris Hunter, a 59-year-old man already serving a lengthy prison sentence for a murder in California, now faces a capital murder trial in Orlando, Florida. Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty if Hunter is convicted of the 2022 killing of 38-year-old Theresa Ann Green. Authorities discovered Green’s body inside the trunk of her own vehicle at a local pharmacy after witnesses reported suspicious behavior from the defendant.

The investigation into Green’s death began after witnesses observed Hunter acting erratically following a social gathering at their shared apartment complex. According to testimony, Hunter allegedly enlisted an acquaintance to follow him while he abandoned the victim's car, reportedly admitting at the time that he had done something terrible. Medical examiners later confirmed that Green died from manual strangulation.

This legal proceeding follows Hunter’s previous conviction in Oakland, California, where he received a 110-year sentence for a separate homicide. Investigators linked him to the Florida case after associates revealed he had fled to Orlando shortly after the California incident. With opening statements scheduled for April 6, the court will determine if Hunter faces the ultimate punishment for the death of Green. The trial serves as a significant development in a series of violent crimes spanning across the country.
