Colombia’s Most Elusive Guerrilla Leader Evades Capture Once Again
The Colombian government continues its high-stakes pursuit of Néstor Gregorio Vera, better known as “Iván Mordisco,” the leader of the Estado Mayor Central (EMC) dissident faction. Despite a recent military bombing in the Vaupés department specifically targeting the guerrilla commander, authorities have confirmed that he remains at large. While the operation successfully neutralized several members of his security detail, official forensic reports have debunked early claims that the high-value target was among the casualties. The state currently maintains a reward of approximately US$ 1.3 million for information leading to his capture.
Mordisco has become a symbol of the challenges facing President Gustavo Petro’s “Total Peace” initiative, particularly after becoming the first major criminal leader to abandon the project in 2024. With over three decades of combat experience, he commands a force of roughly 4,000 fighters spread across ten departments. This latest failure to eliminate the leader echoes previous incidents, including a 2022 operation where officials prematurely declared him dead only for him to resurface in a video months later. As the military continues its offensive, Mordisco’s repeated ability to evade death and capture underscores his tactical resilience and the ongoing instability in regions where his faction operates.
