Croatian Football Federation Faces Scrutiny Over Opaque Betting Partnership
The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) is under fire after it was revealed that a key representative for their official Asian betting partner, Dragon Z6, operated under a false identity during the signing of a major sponsorship deal. The agreement, finalized in May 2024, established the gambling website as the exclusive betting partner for the Croatian national team in Asia. Promotional footage of the event featured a man identified as "Alexander Smith," who appeared alongside HNS executives to celebrate the two-year partnership.
However, investigations have identified the man as Branko Balon, a computer science lecturer at Algebra Bernays University in Zagreb. Facial recognition technology matched the individual in the promotional videos to Balon’s professional and social media profiles, contradicting the name used during the official ceremony. Furthermore, footage of the signing event shows Balon appearing to write something other than his supposed alias when signing a commemorative banner.
The lack of transparency surrounding the representative’s identity raises significant questions regarding the due diligence performed by the HNS before entering into a commercial relationship with an opaque gambling entity. As the federation prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, this revelation casts a shadow over the legitimacy of their international marketing efforts and the nature of their ties to the betting industry.
