North Carolina Science Teacher's Killer Confessed During Arrest: Suspect Admits to Murder in Home Invasion
On January 3, science teacher Zoe Welsh, 57, was attacked in her home by an intruder while on the phone with 911. The suspect, Ryan Camacho, 36, was apprehended after being found inside another residence with signs of a break-in. During his interview, Camacho allegedly confessed to killing Welsh by bashing her head with a rock, as reported by WTVG. A rock matching his description was discovered in his bloody jacket.
Camacho has a significant criminal history, including over two dozen arrests and four months in custody for misdemeanors in 2025. Court documents reveal he was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager, experiencing auditory hallucinations. Following a forensic evaluation, Camacho did not meet the criteria to stand trial, leading to his release until Welsh's murder occurred weeks later.
Currently, it remains undetermined if Camacho is competent to face trial for Welsh's murder. He remains in custody without bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on April 30. This case highlights the intersection of violent crime and mental health challenges, raising questions about legal proceedings and public safety.
