Navy Authorized to Fire Warning Shots as Blockade Intensifies Near Iran

The U.S. Navy has been granted authority to fire warning shots if necessary to enforce a blockade around Iranian ports, according to Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During a Pentagon briefing, Caine outlined that any vessel attempting to breach the blockade would face pre-planned tactics, including potential boarding and seizure of the ship. This includes escalating measures such as warning shots, reflecting a significant escalation in U.S. military action.

The blockade was imposed on Monday, targeting all ships entering or leaving Iranian ports. Since its implementation, 13 vessels have heeded warnings and turned back without incident. Navy warships are transmitting clear messages to approaching vessels, emphasizing the consequences of non-compliance. President Donald Trump had earlier announced the blockade, accusing Iran of failing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route. Trump also warned that any Iranian "fast attack ships" interfering with the blockade would be "eliminated."

Despite a ceasefire agreed upon in April and paused military operations, tensions remain high as U.S.-Iranian negotiations have yet to yield progress. The situation underscores ongoing geopolitical tensions and the potential for further escalation in the region.
