Trump Removes Judges Who Blocked Deportation of Student Activists
The Trump administration has dismissed six additional immigration judges, bringing the total number of firings to approximately 100 as part of an effort to overhaul immigration policy and court proceedings. Among those removed were Judges Roopal Patel and Nina Froes, who had previously ruled against the government in cases involving Rümeysa Öztürk and Mohsen Mahdawi, international students advocating for Palestinian rights. This marks a significant shift from past administrations, where such firings were rare.
Critics argue that this approach undermines procedural due process by targeting judges perceived as opposing the administration's goal of increasing deportations with minimal legal safeguards. Carmen Maria Rey Caldas, a former immigration judge who was herself dismissed in August, highlights how this tactic threatens fairness in immigration courts. Similarly, attorney Cyrus Mehta, representing Mahdawi, warns that noncitizens will face rulings from judges under political pressure, further eroding judicial independence and due process.
This move has sparked concerns over the integrity of the immigration system, with critics emphasizing the importance of an impartial judiciary to protect individuals' rights during legal proceedings. The administration's actions reflect a broader strategy to streamline deportations, often bypassing traditional legal safeguards, which has drawn criticism from legal experts and human rights advocates alike.
