Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and Wife Found Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide
The bodies of former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, 47, and his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, 49, were discovered by police on April 16 after receiving a 911 call from one of their children. Authorities believe the incident was an apparent murder-suicide, with Fairfax fatally shooting his wife in the basement before turning the gun on himself in the primary bedroom. The couple had been separated and undergoing a contentious divorce, with Cerina Fairfax serving divorce papers just over a year after their separation in 2024.
According to Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, the family’s home had multiple security cameras installed as part of the divorce proceedings. Earlier that year, Fairfax had called police to report an alleged domestic incident, but subsequent review of the footage revealed no evidence of such an event. Investigators are exploring whether the recent legal developments surrounding their divorce contributed to the tragedy.
Justin Fairfax, a lawyer and former lieutenant governor under Ralph Northam, had previously faced allegations of sexual assault in 2019, which he denied. Known for his advocacy against gun violence during his tenure, Fairfax’s death has added an ironic twist to his public persona. Both children were at home during the incident but are now in the care of family members. This case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic disputes intertwined with legal separations.
