Iran’s Bushehr Reactor Faces Looming Threat of Catastrophic Radiological Disaster

---

The advocacy group Beyond Nuclear has issued a stark warning about the potential dangers of an attack on Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, emphasizing the catastrophic radiological risks involved. As tensions rise between the US, Israel, and Iran, with threats to target critical infrastructure including power plants, concerns over a possible strike on Bushehr have grown.

Constructed by Russia, the 1,000 megawatt VVER reactor at Bushehr is situated along Iran's coast. Its design mirrors those in Ukraine, where ongoing conflicts have already raised international alarms. Despite this similarity, there has been limited global commentary on the risks posed to Bushehr. This lack of attention comes as US President Biden threatens to obliterate Iran's infrastructure by midnight Tuesday if no agreement is reached.

Linda Pentz Gunter, Beyond Nuclear's executive director, asserts that attacking Bushehr would constitute a war crime under the Geneva Convention, which prohibits targeting facilities likely to cause extensive civilian casualties. The reactor's highly radioactive materials pose significant dangers; any attack could lead to fuel overheating, ignition, and explosions, releasing radioactive fallout over vast areas, contaminating agricultural land and海水—a critical drinking source in the region.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has urged restraint, citing its "Seven Indispensable Pillars" to discourage attacks on nuclear facilities. However, Pentz Gunter criticizes the IAEA for promoting nuclear power expansion and relying on rational leaders, whom she describes as clinging to outdated assumptions in a storm of chaos.

Historical precedents like Chernobyl and Fukushima highlight the long-term consequences of nuclear meltdowns. A similar disaster in the Middle East could have devastating effects, with health impacts emerging years later. Beyond Nuclear underscores that Iran's nuclear facilities were pretext for US-Israeli attacks, exacerbated by the dissolution of the JCPOA under Trump, which once ensured Iran's adherence to civil nuclear program boundaries.

The situation at Bushehr underscores the urgent need for global caution, as the potential for a radiological catastrophe looms large.
