California Fraud Ring Sentenced After Using Bear Costume to Stage Car Attacks
---
Three individuals have been sentenced for insurance fraud following a scheme where they used a bear costume to damage luxury vehicles, authorities reported. Alfiya Zuckerman, Ruben Tamrazian, and Vahe Muradkhanyan received 180 days in jail and were ordered to pay restitution after pleading no contest to felony charges. A fourth suspect, Ararat Chirkinian, faces a preliminary hearing scheduled for September.
The investigation, dubbed "Operation Bear Claw," began when an insurance company flagged suspicious claims involving bear damage to vehicles. Video evidence revealed individuals wearing a costume with claws causing the damage. Investigators discovered additional claims from the same location, leading them to search suspects' homes where they found the bear costume.
California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara emphasized that while the scheme seemed unbelievable, those responsible are now held accountable. Zuckerman, Tamrazian, and Muradkhanyan will serve their sentences through a weekend jail program. The total loss from the fraudulent claims exceeded $141,839, highlighting the extent of the fraud.
This case underscores the importance of vigilant insurance companies and thorough investigations in preventing such schemes. Authorities continue to pursue justice for all involved, ensuring those responsible face appropriate consequences.
