Man Charged with Murder After Brutal Attack on Mother-In-Law

Jonathan Schmidt, 35, has been charged with aggravated murder in the death of his mother-in-law, Marcia Van Druten, a 68-year-old woman killed in her home in Sylvania, Ohio. Authorities report that Schmidt broke into Van Druten's residence using a crowbar around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, shattering the sliding glass doors. While her husband slept upstairs, Schmidt allegedly beat Van Druten to death. She was pronounced dead after an autopsy revealed multiple blunt force injuries caused by homicide.

The incident occurred amid a contentious divorce between Schmidt and his wife, which involved a custody battle over their 1-year-old son and disputes over support payments. Friends of the family reported that Schmidt had previously threatened Kinsey, Van Druten's daughter, warning her about her mother's safety. When Kinsey tried calling her mother but received no answer, she alerted her father, who discovered Van Druten's body downstairs.

Schmidt was arrested the following day in La Salle, Michigan, approximately 25 miles northeast of the crime scene. A GoFundMe campaign set up by Emily Hayman, a friend of Schmidt's wife, highlights the emotional toll on the family and community. The fundraiser emphasizes the sudden loss and the challenges faced by those left behind, including raising a child without adequate support. This case underscores the tragic consequences of unresolved domestic conflicts and the importance of heeding warning signs in such situations.
