Grandmother Charged in Horrific Death of 9-Year-Old Girl Whose Body Was Dumped in a Tote
The case of Renesmay Eutsey, a 9-year-old girl whose lifeless body was found in a tote bag along a Pennsylvania river, has shocked the community. Theresa Marie Shipley, 63, faces charges including endangering children and failing to report suspected abuse, while Sandra Lynn Umensetter, 51, is also implicated in the alleged crimes. The charges stem from the girl's death, which occurred after months of reported abuse at the hands of her foster parents, Kourtney Eutsey and Sarah Shipley.
Renesmay was reported missing on September 3, 2025, prompting a police search. A sibling revealed to authorities that she overheard conversations about taking Renesmay to a remote location, and later found her body in a black bag inside a tote along the Youghiogheny River. The affidavit details how the child was subjected to severe abuse, including blunt force trauma, malnourishment, and neglect.
Prosecutors allege that Shipley and Umensetter were present during the abuse but failed to intervene, despite being responsible for Renesmay's care. The autopsy confirmed her death resulted from identical injuries to another child who survived hospitalization. Shipley and Umensetter were arrested and arraigned on March 16, with their next court appearances set for April 29. Kourtney Eutsey is due to go to trial in May, while Sarah Shipley faces a hearing in June.
The case highlights the dire need for vigilance in protecting children from abuse. The prolonged neglect and failure to act by those entrusted with Renesmay's care have left the community grappling with grief and anger. As the legal proceedings continue, questions remain about how such horrific acts could occur under the radar.
