Congress Disapproval Surges to Record-High 86%
A recent Gallup poll reveals that public disapproval of Congress has reached a record high of 86%, with only 10% approving of its performance. This marks the lowest approval rating since tracking began in 1974, underscoring widespread dissatisfaction among Americans.
The surge in disapproval comes amid ongoing political gridlock and several significant issues. The Department of Homeland Security shutdown, now in its tenth week, has exacerbated public frustration. Additionally, Congress's failure to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which would require citizenship documentation for voting registration, has further soured public sentiment. Other factors include tensions over U.S.-Iran relations, high gas prices, and ethics scandals leading to two congressional resignations.
The Republican-led 119th Congress began with a 17% approval rating in January 2025, briefly rising to 31% in March before declining sharply during the government shutdown. Currently, only 3% of Democrats and 11% of independents approve of Congress, reflecting deepening partisan divisions. This record disapproval highlights growing public disillusionment with congressional effectiveness and raises questions about legislative priorities moving forward.
