US Army Develops Heavier Hybrid Infantry Vehicle for Enhanced Capabilities

The United States Army is advancing its fleet of Infantry Squad Vehicles (ISVs) by introducing a heavier, hybrid-powered variant designed to enhance mission capabilities. The service plans to add 606 ISV-Heavy vehicles to its existing fleet of approximately 1,105 ISVs through a multi-phase contracting effort. This shift reflects the Army's evolving strategy for utilizing tactical vehicles in modern combat environments.

The new ISV-H is built on the commercial Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD platform, featuring a heavier-duty chassis rather than additional armor. While it retains some similarities to its lightweight predecessor, the ISV-H emphasizes advanced onboard power generation and mission system support. It can generate 60 kW of continuous high-voltage DC power, 15 kW of 28V DC power, and 4.8 kW of 120V AC power, effectively turning it into a mobile energy source for small units in the field.

The hybrid-electric design also enables "silent drive" and "silent watch" modes, allowing for stealthy operations in high-threat zones while powering essential equipment. Although the ISV-H weighs approximately 9,000 pounds more than the original ISV and carries fewer troops (with configurations ranging from two to six seats), it is "add-on armor capable." This trade-off between increased capability and reduced troop capacity underscores the Army's focus on advancing mission-specific vehicles for diverse operational needs.

The Army has completed the first phase of its solicitation process, collecting industry white papers by April 13. Timelines for subsequent phases, including presentations and final proposals, have yet to be announced. This development marks a significant step in modernizing Army ground forces and highlights the growing importance of hybrid-electric technology in military vehicles.
