Navy Modernizes Uniform Policy for Greater Flexibility
The U.S. Navy has announced updates to its uniform regulations, granting sailors increased flexibility in their work attire. Effective immediately, sailors stationed in the National Capital Region and across the fleet now have the option to wear Service Dress Blues jackets or Eisenhower jackets in office settings. This change allows sailors E-7 and above to choose whether to don these jackets while wearing a white shirt and tie indoors. Additionally, the black garrison cap is now an approved alternative to the combination cover when paired with either the Service Dress Blues coat or the Eisenhower jacket.
The updates also extend to the Navy Working Uniform (NWU) Type III, which will be authorized for wear in the Pentagon starting May 4. This includes all 12 pockets of the NWU, aligning the Navy’s dress code with those of other branches within the Joint Force. The shift aims to promote a warrior ethos among sailors while ensuring they remain prepared for duty outside the Pentagon, where service dress uniforms are still required.
Sailors opting to wear NWU Type III must ensure their uniforms are in good condition, free from tears or excessive damage. Flight suits remain restricted to those on active flight duty within the National Capital Region. The updates do not apply to sailors assigned to non-Navy departments, who must adhere to their respective policies. These changes reflect the Navy’s ongoing efforts to modernize its approach to uniform regulations while maintaining professionalism and tradition.
