Wisconsin Woman Faces Life Sentence in Trial Over Fatal Abuse of 6-Year-Old
LA CROSSE, Wis. — Josie Dikeman, a 34-year-old woman, is on trial for the death of her boyfriend’s 6-year-old son, Alexavier “AJ” Pedrin, who died in February 2023 from blunt force trauma. Dikeman has pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree intentional homicide, chronic neglect of a child resulting in death, and repeated physical abuse of a child causing death. The trial is drawing attention due to the severity of the allegations and the potential for a life sentence if convicted.
AJ Pedrin was described by his grandmother as a playful and loving child who enjoyed spending time with his cousins. His family expressed deep sorrow over his death, emphasizing how much he meant to them. Medical examiners found multiple bruises on AJ’s face, scalp, and neck, along with internal injuries that included a torn liver and brain swelling. Xanax was also detected in his blood, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Prosecutors allege that Dikeman was the only adult present when AJ died. Earlier that month, AJ had been hospitalized with a femur fracture, during which doctors expressed concerns about potential abuse. Testimony from Derek Pedrin, AJ’s father, revealed chaotic family dynamics, including arguments between him and Dikeman, and his admitted struggles with alcohol. Pedrin denied ever being violent toward his children but acknowledged purchasing Xanax for Dikeman.
Trial proceedings have included testimony from deputies and recordings of conversations between Dikeman and Pedrin. Witnesses described AJ’s final moments and the lack of visible distress on him when law enforcement arrived at the home. The trial has also highlighted the emotional toll on AJ’s family, with his grandmother expressing her grief over losing a grandson who was once full of life.
The case has sparked broader discussions about child welfare and the need for vigilance in identifying signs of abuse. As the trial continues, the outcome could have significant implications for Dikeman’s future and the ongoing investigation into AJ’s death.
