Crypto Mogul Funneling Millions to Sink Senator's Political Ascent
The Nevada attorney general’s race has taken an unexpected turn as crypto entrepreneur Jeffrey Berns has poured over $2.5 million into a political action committee backing Zach Conine, Democratic challenger to state Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro. This marks a significant escalation in what is shaping up as a high-stakes battle between two Democrats competing for the same office.
Berns’s donations have been channeled through Conine’s PAC, which has redirected more than $1.8 million to a newly formed campaign entity, Safe and Strong Nevada PAC. The group has launched a coordinated effort to undermine Cannizzaro’s campaign, including online ads and a dedicated website. This level of financial backing is unusual, with political science experts noting that such large contributions from a single donor are rare but increasingly common in modern elections.
The roots of this conflict trace back to 2018, when Cannizzaro played a key role in derailing Berns’s ambitious plan to establish a blockchain-powered “smart city” near Reno. The project aimed to create an autonomous community governed by blockchain technology, a vision that drew support from former Gov. Steve Sisolak but faced fierce opposition over concerns about governance and financial transparency. Cannizzaro’s involvement in blocking the proposal left Berns with a personal vendetta, one he is now seeking to settle through political influence.
Berns, a onetime plaintiff’s lawyer and early investor in cryptocurrencies, has used his wealth to amass a sprawling real estate portfolio and build connections across the crypto sector. His decision to bankroll Conine reflects a broader trend of tech moguls leveraging their fortunes to shape political outcomes, particularly in states like Nevada where campaign finance rules are relatively lax. As the race heats up, analysts warn that this kind of outsized spending could set a precedent for other wealthy individuals seeking to sway elections in their favor.
