Arkansas National Guard Soldiers Honored for Life-Saving Actions Following Tactical Vehicle Collision
Three Arkansas Army National Guard soldiers received Meritorious Service Medals after utilizing improvised tourniquets to save a comrade’s life during a training exercise at Fort Chaffee. The incident occurred Monday when a heavy expanded mobility tactical truck failed to stop, resulting in a rear-end collision with another vehicle in a three-truck convoy. Sgt. Eduardo Salazar, Staff Sgt. Ryan Niblett, and Staff Sgt. Jorge Ramirez acted quickly to stabilize the most severely injured guardsman before professional medical help reached the scene. The victim was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Missouri for emergency treatment.
The accident left eight soldiers injured in total, prompting a large-scale emergency response that included the use of hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the trapped guardsman. While seven of the injured personnel have since returned to duty, the event has triggered a brigade-wide safety stand down to review hazard prevention protocols. Staff Sgt. James Roach also received a medal for his role in monitoring the critically injured soldier during the medical evacuation. Military officials are currently conducting a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision.
