SpaceX and Google Partner to Pave Way for Orbital Data Centers

Google has entered active discussions with SpaceX to advance its ambitious plans for orbital data centers in space. The collaboration aims to place Google’s computing infrastructure into orbit as part of Project Suncatcher, a initiative that seeks to launch prototype satellites by 2027 in partnership with Planet Labs. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, revealed that the company envisions “sending tiny racks of machines and having them in satellites, test them out, and then start scaling from there.”

SpaceX views this venture as a key step toward expanding its presence beyond Earth. The company has already filed an application to launch up to one million satellites for this project. Google, which owns 6.1 percent of SpaceX and holds a representative seat on its board, is also exploring partnerships with other rocket providers to ensure redundancy and flexibility in its space-based computing strategy.

The technology behind orbital data centers is designed to overcome terrestrial limitations such as land availability and power constraints by leveraging solar panels in space. However, significant engineering challenges remain, including the extreme conditions of outer space and the high costs associated with launching and maintaining satellites. Some industry experts have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of the project.

Meanwhile, SpaceX is also expanding its Earth-based computing efforts, having recently announced a large-scale deal with Anthropic involving 300 megawatts of power and over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs. As SpaceX prepares for what could be the largest IPO in history this summer, these partnerships highlight its dual focus on both terrestrial and space-based innovation. The success of orbital data centers could redefine global computing infrastructure, offering unparalleled computational power and resilience.
