AI-Powered System Saves Aircraft in High-Stakes Operation

The head of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) revealed that an advanced AI-powered system has significantly enhanced aircraft safety during Operation Epic Fury, saving numerous planes from potential threats. Lt. Gen. Michael Conley testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee that the tool was operational from day one, enabling large attack drones and manned aircraft to avoid Iranian threats by providing real-time intelligence.

Conley highlighted how necessity drove innovation, as the service rapidly deployed machine learning tools to address the risks faced by MQ-9 Reaper drones and other aircraft in a hostile environment. The AI system streamlined intelligence processing, reducing what would have been a 20-30 minute manual task to just two or three seconds. This capability allowed nine crew members to convert sensitive data into actionable intelligence within cockpits, drastically improving battlefield situational awareness.

The AI tool’s impact has been measurable: over the past 60 days alone, it is reported to have saved multiple aircraft from harm. While Conley acknowledged significant losses, including two U.S. aircraft downed by hostile fire and three F-15s lost to friendly fire, he emphasized that the AI system has mitigated further casualties and demonstrated the potential of emerging technologies in modern warfare.

The Air Force is now exploring next-generation AI tools to enhance its operational picture, with plans to integrate more advanced systems into geographic combatant commands. Conley praised the MQ-9 community for their achievements, noting that they have destroyed hundreds of targets in contested areas during Epic Fury. However, he also expressed a desire to replace lost aircraft quickly, recognizing the challenges involved in procuring new assets.

This revelation offers a rare glimpse into how AFSOC is leveraging AI to adapt and improve its capabilities in high-stakes operations, showcasing both the promise and the ongoing struggles of integrating cutting-edge technology into combat scenarios.
