Satellite Images Reveal Extensive Destruction in Southern Lebanon Amid Ceasefire

The fragile ceasefire agreed between Israel and Hezbollah last month is holding, but satellite imagery reveals alarming destruction across southern Lebanon. At least 46 of 54 towns and villages within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) "Yellow Line" have been heavily damaged or entirely flattened, with much of the destruction occurring in recent weeks.

Bellingcat's analysis, using medium-resolution PlanetScope satellite imagery provided by Planet Labs, shows the scale of damage between March 2 and May 8, 2026. The towns are color-coded to indicate varying degrees of damage: red for significant destruction, yellow for pre-war damage, and white for undamaged areas. This visual evidence highlights the widespread impact of the ongoing conflict.

Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has stated that all homes in Lebanese villages near the border will be destroyed, mirroring tactics used in Gaza. The aim is to create a buffer zone to eliminate security threats. However, this approach has raised concerns about humanitarian impacts, as entire communities have been displaced.

Multiple international outlets, including BBC, CNN, and The New York Times, have reported on the destruction. Bellingcat's comprehensive satellite imagery provides a broader view of the scale and pace of demolition across southern Lebanon. IDF has also shared videos of controlled demolitions, while social media shows the aftermath in towns like Naqoura and Kfar Kila, which were already damaged during the 2024 invasion.

The area south of Lebanon's Litani and Zahrani Rivers remains under IDF evacuation orders since early March, with regular warnings to residents ahead of airstrikes. The destruction within the "Yellow Line" appears to result from controlled demolitions using explosives or construction vehicles, further raising questions about the long-term humanitarian and regional implications.
