Tragic Reversal: Driver Crashes Car Into Birthday Party Tent, Kills Woman, and Injures Many

A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for reversing his car into a tent at a child's birthday party in Bladensburg, Maryland, on October 18, 2025. The crash killed 31-year-old Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez and injured at least 13 others, including eight children and five adults. The driver, identified as 66-year-old Sunday Joseph, fled the scene after the accident but surrendered to authorities about 10 hours later.

Joseph pleaded guilty to charges of failure to remain at the scene of a fatal accident and 14 counts of reckless driving. He was sentenced to more than the state's recommended guidelines, which included a ban on driving and eight hours of community service annually on the crash anniversary. However, victims' families expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, stating it did not reflect the profound emotional toll caused by the tragedy.

The birthday party, meant to be a joyful celebration, turned into a nightmare when Joseph's car crashed into the tent. After the collision, he abandoned his vehicle and left the scene. Emergency responders had to lift the car to free those trapped underneath. The incident has deeply affected the community, with one family member stating, "Children will never view birthday parties the same way again."

A GoFundMe campaign established for Hernandez Gutierrez's family highlighted her impact on others, describing her as a beloved individual whose warmth and kindness touched everyone around her. The tragedy has left lasting scars on those who attended what was intended to be a happy gathering.
