Nakba Day Marks 78 Years of Palestinian Resilience Against Israeli Occupation

Palestinians worldwide are observing Nakba Day, commemorating the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of people during the creation of Israel in 1948. This year marks 78 years since the event, yet its legacy continues to shape the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israel. Muhammad Shehada, a Palestinian writer born in Gaza who now resides in Denmark, highlighted the enduring struggle for survival and self-determination. He emphasized that despite Israel's efforts to erase the Palestinian people, their resilience remains unbroken.

Shehada pointed to recent escalations following October 7, 2023, as a turning point where Israel has openly embraced a more aggressive stance. "The mask of civility has been removed," he said, describing how national pride in Israel now aligns with boasts of annihilating Palestinians. This shift underscores the escalating violence and suppression faced by Palestinians, particularly those in Gaza, who have endured decades under an Israeli blockade and occupation.

In addition to the military tactics, Shehada criticized what he referred to as a "disarmament trap" in peace negotiations. He argued that Israel's proposals effectively demand Palestinian surrender, stripping them of their ability to defend themselves while leaving them vulnerable to further attacks by the same forces responsible for past genocides.

The discussion also turned to recent tensions between Israel and international media. Following the publication of a New York Times column by Nicholas Kristof detailing systemic sexual abuse in Israeli prisons, Israel threatened legal action against the newspaper. Shehada viewed this as a sign of Israeli panic, noting that such reporting could amplify global awareness of human rights abuses.

As Nakba Day serves as both a remembrance and a call to action, Shehada's words underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Palestinians and their unwavering determination to persist despite overwhelming odds.
