Trans College Student Stabbed 40 Times in Horrific Attack; Suspect Held on $10 Million Bail
On May 10, a 31-year-old man was arrested and held on $10 million bail after being implicated in the brutal stabbing of a University of Washington student. The victim, identified as Juniper Blessing, a 19-year-old trans student, was found unresponsive in the laundry room of a university housing complex. Emergency responders determined she had suffered multiple stab wounds, including 40 injuries to her head, neck, shoulders, hands, and arms, which ultimately caused her death due to blood loss.
Surveillance footage from the laundry room showed the suspect, later identified as Christopher Michael Leahy, entering the area where Blessing was cleaning a dryer. The video appeared to capture Leahy looking directly at the camera before Blessing was found on the floor. Some of the footage was missing after the cord was pulled, but additional video was retrieved from the device's SD card. Witnesses reported hearing Blessing scream as she was chased into the laundry room by a man claiming he was waiting for his laundry.
Leahy turned himself in to Bellevue police two days after the incident and was transferred to Seattle detectives. During his first court appearance on May 14, a judge set his bail at $10 million and charged him with first-degree murder. Leahy’s defense argued for second-degree murder, but prosecutors maintained that the severity of the injuries warranted the higher charge.
Blessing, a talented musician and activist, was described by her family as an "amazing human being" who was deeply compassionate and intelligent. Her death has shocked the community, with Seattle Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck calling it a "devastating and horrific" blow to the city’s trans residents. Leahy is scheduled to appear in court again on May 18.
This case has drawn significant attention due to its brutality and the high-profile nature of the suspect. As investigations continue, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the attack and whether the missing surveillance footage could provide further clarity.
