Michigan Couple Pleads No Contest to Severe Child Abuse Charges

A Michigan couple has pleaded no contest to first-degree child abuse charges in connection with the mistreatment of two adopted children, authorities reported. Jessica Klimp, 45, and her husband, Jason Klimp, 47, faced the allegations after one of their adopted children was hospitalized in Tennessee with severe malnutrition and dehydration.

The investigation revealed that the couple forced their adopted children to consume only liquids, leading to significant weight loss and stunted growth. Authorities also discovered a homemade straitjacket, dog cages used to confine the children, and security alarms installed on bedroom doors. The victims, who were siblings, were allegedly made to sleep in plastic storage containers in a cold basement without blankets when they wet their beds.

The Klimps previously pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse in October 2025 and were sentenced to 10 years in prison each. They are currently awaiting additional charges in Michigan, with Jason Klimp scheduled for sentencing on June 16. Jessica Klimp’s sentencing date has yet to be determined.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel emphasized the importance of protecting children from abuse, stating that the cruelty inflicted by the couple was “heartbreaking.” While no outcome can fully heal the trauma endured by the victims, Nessel expressed hope that the convictions would bring a sense of justice and healing for the abused children.
