Future of Elite Night Stalker Helicopter Upgrades Depends on Uncertain Engine Program

The U.S. Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, known as the Night Stalkers, faces a critical turning point for its MH-60M Black Hawk fleet. During the annual SOF Week conference, officials from U.S. Special Operations Command revealed that plans for a major "Block 2" upgrade, slated for fiscal year 2030, are entirely contingent upon the success of the Improved Turbine Engine Program. The military is currently monitoring the development of the General Electric T901 engine, which has faced past threats of cancellation despite its potential to provide a 50 percent increase in shaft power and improved fuel efficiency.

The Night Stalker MH-60M variants are heavily modified, carrying specialized sensors, defensive suites, and communications equipment that make them significantly heavier than standard Black Hawks. While these aircraft currently utilize the powerful YT706 engine to manage their weight, the integration of the T901 would allow for greater payload capacity, including advanced launched effects and medical equipment, without sacrificing performance. Program managers emphasized that while they are eager to adopt the new technology, the transition remains tethered to the broader Army engine development timeline. If the T901 program maintains its current trajectory, it will serve as the backbone for the next generation of these elite special operations assets.
