Irish Defense Forces Secure Surprise Victory in U.S. Army Bradley Competition
An Irish Defense Forces crew has achieved a stunning victory in the Bradley Fighting Vehicle division at the Sullivan Cup. Held this month at Fort Benning, Georgia, the prestigious armor competition tests the gunnery, maintenance, and maneuvering skills of tank and Bradley crews. In a surprising turn of events, the Irish team outperformed several American crews to take first place, including a defeat of the U.S. Army's 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team.
The win is particularly notable because the Irish Army does not currently operate any Bradley Fighting Vehicles within its own fleet. To prepare for the event, the crew trained using the Mowag Piranha, an armored personnel carrier used in Ireland that serves as the closest domestic equivalent to the Bradley. The team credits their success to the rigorous training provided by American service members upon their arrival in the United States.
The Sullivan Cup is a biennial event designed to challenge military teams through a series of high-pressure physical and technical trials. While the Irish team dominated the Bradley category, the title for the best tank division was awarded to a group of soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division. Other international participants in the competition included crews from the United Kingdom and Poland.
The victory highlights the professional capabilities of the Irish soldiers and the strength of the training partnership between the two nations. Despite the competitive nature of the event, members of the winning crew noted that the American teams remained professional and respectful following the upset. This result underscores the versatility of the Irish crew in adapting to foreign hardware under competitive conditions.
