
India Advances Drone Combat Power With New Precision Missile
India has successfully concluded final development trials for a compact, precision-guided missile designed for launch from unmanned aerial vehicles. Tested at a range near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, the weapon system is capable of engaging both aerial and ground targets. This development marks a shift in India's drone strategy, moving beyond traditional intelligence and surveillance roles toward active combat capabilities.
The project is a collaborative effort between the Defense Research Development Organisation, state-run Bharat Dynamics Limited, and private firm Adani Defence Systems and Technologies. By utilizing a domestic supply chain involving numerous small and medium enterprises, the government aims to achieve greater self-reliance in military hardware. The missile's miniaturized design allows drones to target armored vehicles, bunkers, helicopters, and other enemy drones with high accuracy.
This technological leap provides India with more mobile and cost-effective air defense options. Experts suggest that the ability to intercept low-altitude threats and destroy ground assets from a drone platform significantly alters the tactical landscape. The integration of an automated ground control system further enhances the speed and efficiency of launch operations during active conflict.
The push for armed drone capabilities comes as military drones increasingly reshape modern battlefields. Following recent regional tensions and large-scale counter-drone exercises, Indian military leadership emphasizes that unmanned platforms are no longer just for observation. This milestone is viewed as the first step in a broader effort to develop a diverse suite of miniaturized weapons to counter the proliferation of drone threats.
