Massacres and Village Destruction Plaguing Rohingya Minority in Myanmar

Evidence is emerging of widespread atrocities and systemic destruction in Myanmar's Rakhine State, specifically targeting the Rohingya Muslim minority. Reports indicate that the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group fighting the military junta, may have killed at least 170 civilians during a massacre in the village of Htan Shauk Khan on May 2, 2024. Survivors describe scenes of mass killings and extreme violence, with some reporting the loss of numerous family members, including children.

The violence is centered in Buthidaung Township, a primary hub for the Rohingya population. Between April and May 2024, at least 40 villages in the area were burned to the ground as the Arakan Army and the military junta battled for territorial control. Both factions are accused of committing abuses against civilians. Furthermore, the military junta has intensified the danger for the Rohingya by forcibly conscripting them into its ranks, which has fueled further hostility and violence against the community.

Recent investigations utilizing aerial imagery reveal a broader pattern of devastation across the region. Approximately 115 villages in Rakhine State have been partially or completely destroyed since the February 2021 military coup. This data suggests a deliberate strategy of making civilian areas uninhabitable, effectively erasing entire communities from the map.

The Arakan Army denies targeting civilians, claiming that casualties were limited to junta soldiers and militants. However, the strict control maintained by both the military and armed groups makes independent verification difficult. Many of these atrocities only come to light months later when survivors manage to flee across the border into refugee camps in Bangladesh.
