Army Bets on Automation to Scale New Data Operations Center

The U.S. Army is banking on advanced automation and artificial intelligence to sustain its nascent Data Operations Center (ADOC) as the service looks to streamline complex information flows across the battlefield. Launched in April at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, the center serves as a centralized hub designed to bridge the gap between operational units and the fragmented military systems that often hinder data connectivity. By providing support for tasks ranging from weather data integration to targeting processes, the ADOC aims to ensure that tactical units remain synchronized in an era of increasingly sophisticated global threats.

Currently operating as a 180-day prototype, the 25-person task force has already processed 68 requests for assistance from units stationed worldwide, including those engaged in active conflict. To manage this rising volume of inquiries, leadership is prioritizing the implementation of AI agents and automated workflows. These tools are expected to reduce the time required to resolve technical tickets from days to mere minutes. Brig. Gen. Michael Kaloostian, the task force director, emphasizes that the organization must remain lean, utilizing technology to achieve a higher output without significantly expanding its human headcount.

The future of the ADOC remains subject to a formal evaluation by the Army, with a critical decision on its long-term viability expected by October 1. While the pilot currently functions using personnel and resources borrowed from other commands, officials are working to define the center’s permanent structure, funding requirements, and operational authorities. Although the ultimate cost and organizational form of the center are still being determined, leadership remains optimistic that the ADOC will evolve into a permanent fixture of the Army’s modernization efforts. By documenting solutions and identifying recurring trends, the center seeks to transform how the service manages its vast, complex data landscape.
