Sweden to Bolster Ukrainian Air Defense with Saab Gripen Fighter Jets

Sweden has committed to donating up to 16 Saab Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine, with the first aircraft expected to arrive in early 2027. During a meeting in Uppsala, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson confirmed that these secondhand jets will be sourced from existing national stocks to expedite the transfer process. In addition to the aircraft, the agreement includes the provision of advanced weaponry, specifically the Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, which significantly enhances the long-range combat capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force.

Beyond the initial donation, Ukraine has outlined a long-term strategy to acquire up to 20 of the more advanced Gripen E/F models. The Swedish Ministry of Defense indicated that this procurement is intended to be financed through a 2.9-billion-euro loan provided by the European Union. While the ultimate objective for the Ukrainian military involves building a fleet of 100 to 150 Gripen aircraft, officials emphasize that the acquisition of the newer E/F variants remains in the negotiation phase. Saab has clarified that no formal contracts for these advanced jets have been finalized at this time.

Training for Ukrainian pilots and ground crews is already underway to ensure a smooth transition to the Swedish platform. The expansion of these training programs is scheduled for the coming autumn. By integrating these modern Western fighters, Ukraine aims to modernize its aging air fleet and improve its ability to protect its airspace and civilian infrastructure. The collaboration represents a significant shift in defense cooperation between the two nations, moving toward a sustained, multi-year commitment to bolster Ukraine's aerial defense posture against ongoing regional threats.
