Judge Grants Venue Change for Apalachee High School Shooting Trial
Colt Gray, the teenager accused of the 2024 mass shooting at Apalachee High School, will face trial outside the Atlanta metropolitan area. During a status conference in Barrow County on Thursday, Judge Nicholas Primm approved a defense motion to relocate the proceedings, a decision that faced no opposition from the prosecution. Defense attorney Charlton Allen argued that the intense media scrutiny surrounding the case necessitated a change of venue to ensure a fair trial. While the specific location remains undecided, Judge Primm indicated that Columbia County is currently the primary candidate for the trial, which is tentatively slated to begin in mid-October.
This appearance marked the first time the 16-year-old defendant has been seen in court in six months. The legal proceedings for the younger Gray are moving forward as his father, Colin Gray, prepares for his own sentencing on July 28. The elder Gray was recently convicted on 29 charges related to the tragedy, with prosecutors successfully arguing that he bears criminal responsibility for providing his son with the firearm used in the attack. To avoid logistical conflicts, Judge Primm expressed interest in establishing a deadline for any potential plea changes before the father’s sentencing date.
The shooting, which occurred on September 4, 2024, resulted in the deaths of two students, 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie. Nine others sustained injuries during the incident. Colt Gray, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, currently faces 55 charges, including multiple counts of murder and aggravated assault. The court continues to navigate the complex legal requirements of this case as it prepares to move the trial to a new jurisdiction.
