Pentagon Seeks $2 Billion Investment to Unify Fragmented Command and Control Networks
The Department of Defense is requesting over $2 billion in its fiscal 2027 budget to overhaul its command-and-control infrastructure, aiming to replace disjointed systems with a cohesive, enterprise-wide network. This massive funding push focuses on the Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control initiative, which seeks to integrate sensors and shooters across all military branches into a single, unified digital environment. By consolidating software-centric tools, the Pentagon intends to provide commanders with a "single pane of glass" for real-time situational awareness and intelligence workflows.
A significant portion of this request, exceeding $1.5 billion, is earmarked for expanding access to the Palantir-developed Maven Smart System. Recently elevated to an official program of record, this AI-enabled platform aggregates vast amounts of data to provide decision-making advantages across the battlefield. Additionally, the department has allocated $60 million for the Virtual Joint Operations Center, a project designed to bring browser-based command capabilities to tactical users operating in low-connectivity environments. These investments represent a strategic shift from rapid, experimental deployments to a standardized, permanent program of record.
The proposed budget marks a dramatic increase from previous years, with spending on mission command applications jumping from roughly $103 million in 2025 to the requested $2 billion for 2027. Pentagon officials state that this transition is necessary to move beyond fragmented, service-specific tools toward a globally interconnected architecture. Looking ahead, the department plans to maintain this momentum with sustained funding requests of approximately $1.9 billion annually through 2031. This long-term financial commitment underscores the military's urgency in establishing a secure, data-driven framework that can support complex operations across all domains of modern warfare.
