Boeing Ordered to Pay $50M Settlement for Family of 737 MAX Crash Victim
Boeing has been ordered by a Chicago jury to pay nearly $50 million in damages to the family of Samya Stumo, a 24-year-old Ethiopian Airlines passenger who died when Flight 302 crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa in March 2019. The crash was one of two involving Boeing's controversial 737 MAX model within months of each other, resulting in the deaths of all 346 people on board both flights.
Stumo’s mother, Nadia Milleron, has been vocal about Boeing's alleged negligence and lack of transparency regarding the aircraft's safety issues. She testified that despite knowing about a malfunction with the plane following the earlier crash in Indonesia, company officials decided to continue flying the model without addressing the problem. The decision to proceed without fixing the issue contributed directly to her daughter’s tragic death.
While Milleron acknowledges the significance of this settlement for her family, she remains committed to pursuing further legal action and public scrutiny of Boeing's safety protocols. "This trial was not about accountability," Milleron stated. "We want to prevent future tragedies by exposing what really went wrong within the company." Her ongoing efforts aim to ensure that such devastating aviation accidents do not recur due to similar corporate missteps or cover-ups.
