ICE Agents Use Force Against Immigrant Detainees at Newark's GEO-Run Jail

ICE agents have escalated their use of violence against immigrant detainees at Delaney Hall, a privately-run detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. The facility, owned and operated by the GEO Group, has been the site of ongoing protests and a hunger strike initiated by hundreds of detained immigrants demanding their immediate release. Congressmember Analilia Mejía toured the facility recently and reported that many detainees have faced severe mistreatment, including being hospitalized after suffering beatings and exposure to pepper spray at the hands of armed ICE agents.

The protesters outside Delaney Hall have also seen increasing tension as solidarity demonstrations grow more confrontational in response to the deteriorating conditions inside. Local journalist Bob Hennelly notes that the situation has worsened since last year when federal agents arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and New Jersey Congressmember LaMonica McIver for trespassing after they entered Delaney Hall during a visit aimed at supporting detained immigrants.

Community organizer Li Adorno, from the immigrant rights group Movimiento Cosecha, highlights that detainees are being held in deplorable conditions despite signing voluntary deportation orders. This situation underscores broader concerns about the administration's aggressive enforcement tactics and the unchecked power wielded by ICE agents and private prison companies like GEO Group. The escalation of violence and disregard for humane treatment raises serious questions about the integrity of law enforcement practices in Newark and beyond.
