Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Bludgeoning Four Homeless Men in New York City

A Manhattan court has sentenced Randy Santos, a 31-year-old man, to 40 years to life in prison for the brutal murders of four homeless individuals in New York City’s Chinatown district. The attacks occurred on October 5, 2019, when Santos used a metal bar to strike and kill Anthony Manson, Nazario Abdelardo Vazquez Villegas, Florencio Moran Camano, and Cheun Kok. Additionally, he severely injured David Hernandez during the same night.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office announced the sentencing on May 28, following Santos' conviction in February for four counts of first-degree murder, one count each of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and attempted first-degree assault. During his attacks that night, Santos dropped his weapon but returned to continue assaulting Cheun Kok after eyewitnesses called 911.

Santos’ actions were part of a pattern of violent behavior; he had previously been arrested six times before the October incident for assaults on various individuals in public spaces and institutions. His mother reported that she had kicked him out of their home following an assault on her, highlighting his history of aggressive conduct.

At trial, Santos' defense argued that he suffers from schizophrenia and was not responsible for his actions due to severe mental illness. They claimed that Santos believed a voice in his head instructed him to kill 40 people or face death himself. Despite this claim, the court proceeded with sentencing, acknowledging the gravity of the crimes committed against vulnerable individuals.

During the sentencing hearing, senior trial counsel Alfred Peterson emphasized the impact on society and the value of human life, noting that there were no victim impact statements due to the absence of survivors to speak for their loved ones. Santos himself apologized for his actions, expressing regret over what he had done. District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. underscored the importance of protecting vulnerable residents like homeless individuals, stating that such crimes highlight ongoing challenges in ensuring safety and support for all city inhabitants.
