World Cup Fans Face Sky-High Costs as Short-Term Rentals Surge

The FIFA World Cup in North America this summer is driving up costs for international football enthusiasts, with expenses such as flights, accommodation, food, and tickets totaling thousands of dollars per week. Local businesses and FIFA have faced accusations of price gouging due to the steep prices preceding the multi-week event. In response to high hotel rates, many fans are turning to short-term rental platforms like Airbnb for more affordable options. According to data from AirDNA, a leading analytics platform in the short-term rental industry, demand has surged significantly in host cities across Mexico, with Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey experiencing booking increases of up to 186% on matchdays compared to the previous year. The nightly rates in these cities have also risen by an average of 72%.

In contrast, U.S. and Canadian host cities have seen smaller price hikes, suggesting that baseline demand is higher there. However, for those still seeking accommodation, recent reports indicate mixed results. Listings that were available as of May 28 showed a nearly double increase in prices compared to already-booked accommodations. Despite this, with vacancy rates indicating ample availability and hoteliers reporting lower-than-expected demand, last-minute bookers might find better deals as the event approaches on June 11. This fluctuation underscores the dynamic nature of the rental market during major events like the World Cup, offering both challenges and opportunities for travelers and local providers alike.
