Marine Corps Drill Instructor Dies During Florida Trip

A 24-year-old drill instructor from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot-Parris Island was found deceased in a hotel room in Starke, Florida, on May 30. Sgt. Albert Haynes II was attending a poolee function organized by the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station-Jacksonville when the incident occurred. The Bradford County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Haynes' death.

Haynes, originally from Austin, Pennsylvania, had been serving with Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion at Parris Island. His service record highlights his commitment to the Marine Corps, having enlisted as a Field Artillery Cannoneer and completing extensive training, including the Field Artillery Basic Course in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

The incident has raised concerns within the military community about the well-being of young drill instructors who often face high levels of stress. Haynes' awards, which include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and multiple Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, underscore his dedication to his role as a Marine. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the cause of death and provide closure for Haynes’ family, colleagues, and fellow Marines.
