350.org Urges Global Action as WMO Warns of Intensifying El Niño
350.org has responded to a recent warning from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) that El Niño conditions are expected to intensify and bring more extreme weather events in the coming months. Anne Jellema, Executive Director of 350.org, emphasized that while El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon, its effects are being exacerbated by human-induced climate change resulting from fossil fuel emissions. As global temperatures continue to rise, these climatic patterns are becoming increasingly severe, leading to more intense heatwaves, floods, droughts, and wildfires worldwide.
Jellema stressed the need for immediate preparedness but also highlighted that addressing the root cause of this crisis is crucial. She argued that phasing out fossil fuels and holding polluters accountable must be prioritized alongside emergency measures. To support these efforts, 350.org advocates for a permanent windfall tax on fossil fuel companies to help fund climate adaptation initiatives in affected regions. The organization also underscores the importance of international cooperation, recognizing that no single country can effectively combat this global challenge alone.
