Gulf Conflict Escalates as Iran Strikes Kuwait and US Responds Near Hormuz Strait

The conflict in the Persian Gulf intensified Wednesday when Iranian forces launched attacks against Kuwait, damaging its airport and injuring over 60 people. The United States responded with military strikes near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, highlighting ongoing tensions despite diplomatic efforts to establish a ceasefire. According to local authorities, an Iranian drone and missile assault targeted Kuwait International Airport, resulting in significant damage to facilities and diplomatic missions. One person was killed, and dozens were injured during the attack.

In response to these actions, U.S. Central Command reported carrying out "defensive strikes" against Iranian targets near Qeshm Island, located at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military targeted missile launch sites and boats suspected of laying mines in the area. However, Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps claimed that they had attacked U.S. military installations in Bahrain and a vessel identified as Panaya, although these claims were denied by CENTCOM.

The renewed hostilities come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict, which began on February 28, 2026. Despite an initial ceasefire agreement reached in early April, sporadic attacks have continued to challenge the fragile peace. Oil prices rose more than 2% following Wednesday's events due to concerns over energy supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump has been working towards a deal that would end hostilities and address broader issues such as Iran’s nuclear program. However, negotiations remain complex, with Tehran insisting on concessions like lifting sanctions on crude oil exports and allowing access to billions of dollars in frozen assets before agreeing to any terms. The president faces domestic pressure to reduce fuel prices while avoiding significant compromises with Iran.

The escalation underscores the precarious nature of the current ceasefire and raises concerns about further destabilization in the region, impacting global energy markets and security dynamics.
