Iran Aims to Strengthen Economic Ties with China Amid US-Israeli Pressure

Iranian Parliament Speaker and special representative for China affairs, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, convened a high-level meeting in Tehran this week to align the country's economic strategy more closely with that of Beijing. The session included key Iranian officials such as the ministers of economy, oil, and industry, along with the central bank governor and the head of the Plan and Budget Organization.

The assembly focused on establishing a unified government approach to enhance bilateral relations between Iran and China while addressing ongoing challenges posed by US-Israeli tensions in the region. Officials discussed how to leverage China's economic influence amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to US and Israeli vessels, which has significantly impacted maritime trade routes.

In recent months, Iran has seen a surge in rail exports of oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to China, tripling since April when the United States imposed an "illegal" blockade on Iranian ports. This strategic shift aims to circumvent economic sanctions by utilizing alternative transportation methods like freight trains that now depart every three to four days from Iran's eastern border with China.

While rail capacity offers a faster transit time of approximately 15 days compared to traditional sea routes, it remains a limited option given the vast difference in cargo volume between rail and maritime shipping. Despite these constraints, the increased collaboration underscores Iran’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with China as a counterbalance to geopolitical pressures from other nations.
