Anthropic, a prominent artificial intelligence firm valued at nearly a trillion dollars, recently released a policy paper that strongly condemns the use of AI by authoritarian regimes like China. The company argues that democratic nations must lead in AI development and deployment to prevent an era dominated by "authoritarian AI." However, Anthropic's stance on this issue is complicated by its own financial ties to autocratic governments. Notably, a significant portion of Anthropic’s funding comes from the sovereign wealth fund of Abu Dhabi, an authoritarian monarchy known for its repressive policies.

The company’s policy paper emphasizes the need for democratic oversight in AI development and deployment, suggesting that such control will protect societies from oppressive regimes. Yet, this advocacy is at odds with the reality of its investment structure. Anthropic raised a substantial $30 billion in February from MGX, an Emirati government-controlled fund, and followed up with another $65 billion capital round in May.
