Florida Man Sentenced for Stealing Excavator to Rob ATM Next to Police Station
A 43-year-old man from Walton County, Florida, has been sentenced to 11 months in jail followed by three years of probation after attempting to steal an ATM using a stolen excavator. The incident occurred on April 16, 2025, when police noticed the unusual activity at a bank located next door to the local police station. Upon investigation, officers discovered that someone had been operating an excavator near the ATM.
Christopher Hughes was identified as the suspect through security footage and admitted to stealing the construction equipment with the intention of removing the ATM from the premises. During interviews with investigators, Hughes revealed his motivation for the crime: he stated that "I would rather rob a bank than work for my brother," suggesting personal financial difficulties or dissatisfaction with employment options.
Hughes was arrested on April 22 and charged with grand theft of construction equipment, criminal mischief, and burglary involving property damage. He pleaded no contest to these charges in court on June 2, leading to his sentencing. The case highlights the lengths some individuals may go to avoid legal work or financial hardship, even resorting to drastic measures that involve law enforcement agencies located nearby.
