Northeast Cartel Maintains Stronghold Despite Leadership Losses

The Northeast Cartel (CDN) is a prominent criminal organization in northeastern Mexico that has diversified its illegal activities beyond drug trafficking to include extortion, kidnapping, human trafficking, and migrant smuggling. Emerging from the disintegration of the Zetas cartel around 2012, the CDN inherited significant portions of the infrastructure and territory previously controlled by its predecessor. Despite facing relentless pressure from law enforcement, including the capture of several high-ranking members, the CDN has managed to sustain a powerful presence along the US-Mexico border.

In May 2026, Mexican authorities apprehended José Antonio Cortes Huerta, also known as "El Titán," who was a key leader within the Northeast Cartel. This arrest followed a lengthy investigation that began in March 2025 with the seizure of a tanker carrying ten million liters of diesel fuel near Altamira, Tamaulipas. The capture of El Titán represents another significant blow to the CDN's leadership structure but has not diminished its overall influence or territorial control.

The resilience and adaptability of the Northeast Cartel underscore its continued significance in Mexico's criminal landscape. By maintaining strategic territories and evolving their operations to meet current challenges, the CDN remains a formidable force in northeastern Mexico, posing ongoing threats to regional security and stability.
