ICE Detains Elderly Palestinian Again Despite Court Order

ICE has once again detained 77-year-old Akram Mahmoud Omar, a Louisiana grandfather who was previously ordered by a federal judge to be released from custody due to health concerns. Omar had been initially seized last October during a routine check-in and subsequently suffered a heart attack while in ICE detention at the Angola prison complex in Louisiana. On May 29, Judge Brian Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana found that ICE had violated Omar’s constitutional rights by unlawfully detaining him and ordered his immediate release.

However, just ten days after being freed, ICE re-arrested Omar and attempted to deport him without giving him adequate time to prepare or say goodbye to family members. This move prompted an emergency motion from Omar's lawyer, Ken Mayeaux, leading Judge Jackson to issue another order on June 8 demanding that ICE release Omar immediately and refrain from attempting any further removal actions during the ongoing legal proceedings.

ICE spokesperson Angelina Vicknair responded by stating that the agency complies with all court orders. Nevertheless, Bridget Pranzatelli, an attorney with the National Immigration Project, argues that such defiance of judicial rulings is commonplace in ICE's treatment of Palestinians and elderly detainees like Omar. She emphasizes that this case highlights a broader pattern of disregard for federal court decisions and human rights protections within immigration enforcement practices.
