Prominent Doctor Reverses Stance on Vitamin K Shots for Newborns
Dr. Joseph Mercola, a well-known figure in the health and wellness community with over 1.7 million followers on Facebook, has dramatically changed his long-held position regarding vitamin K shots for newborn babies. For more than a decade, Dr. Mercola had warned parents against administering these shots, claiming they were unnecessary. However, following recent discussions with ProPublica about the dangers of declining vitamin K injections, he now fully supports their use.
Dr. Mercola’s shift in opinion comes after an alarming increase in newborns not receiving the recommended vitamin K shot, which has been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics since 1961 to prevent bleeding disorders. Without this preventive measure, infants are at a significantly higher risk—81 times greater—of developing late-onset vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB), an often fatal condition. The doctor's reversal highlights the critical importance of these shots in safeguarding newborn health.
In his recent article on April 19th, Dr. Mercola acknowledged the role his past writings may have played in spreading misinformation about vitamin K injections and emphasized that current scientific evidence overwhelmingly supports their use for all newborns. He has also directed concerned parents to consult with pediatricians regarding this issue. "Vitamin K deficiency bleeding is rare but can be devastating," he stated, urging parents to consider the benefits of a single injection at birth.
Dr. Mercola’s change in stance underscores the broader challenge faced by healthcare providers and public health officials in combating misinformation that circulates online, particularly after events like the COVID-19 pandemic have heightened mistrust towards medical interventions among some segments of the population. This shift may help alleviate concerns for parents who are unsure about the necessity of vitamin K shots for their newborns.
