Trump Criticizes Netanyahu Over Israel's Continued Occupation in Lebanon
The United States and Iran are set to sign a historic agreement aimed at ending their longstanding military conflict. The memorandum of understanding, obtained by CNN and other media outlets, includes provisions for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon. Additionally, the deal promises sanctions relief for Iran and access to its frozen assets abroad, along with a $300 billion fund dedicated to reconstruction and development efforts in the country.
However, Israel has rejected these terms, declaring its intent to maintain control over southern Lebanon despite international pressure. This defiance has drawn criticism from President Donald Trump, who appears increasingly frustrated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's approach to regional conflicts. According to Israeli political analyst Ori Goldberg, speaking to Democracy Now! from Tel Aviv, Trump's disapproval stems not from humanitarian concerns but rather from a sense of disrespect and lack of deference shown by Netanyahu towards U.S. interests in the region.
The situation highlights growing tensions between Washington and Jerusalem over how to handle Iran and other regional issues. As the agreement is set to be signed, it remains unclear whether Israel's stance will lead to further diplomatic fallout or if there will be attempts at mediation to reconcile these differing positions.
