Judge Lashes Out at Serial Killer Rex Heuermann During Sentencing Hearing

Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old man who confessed to killing eight women along New York’s Gilgo Beach between 1993 and 2010, faced a stern judge during his sentencing hearing on Wednesday. The victims were all working in the sex trade at the time of their murders. Despite Heuermann's plea of guilty to seven counts of murder, he admitted to an eighth victim, Karen Vergata.

The case against Heuermann was built through meticulous investigative work involving cellphone records and DNA evidence. Investigators tracked down Heuermann by linking him to a Chevrolet Avalanche seen near the disappearance of one of his victims, Amber Costello. This led to a trove of burner phone records that connected Heuermann to multiple murders.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Timothy Mazzei expressed deep disgust towards Heuermann, challenging him on whether he felt remorse for his actions. When asked if he was at least sorry for what he did to the eight women he strangled to death, Heuermann responded with a simple "Yes." However, this acknowledgment failed to impress the judge, who called Heuermann a "disgusting and despicable small man" and a coward.

Heuermann received sentences of three consecutive life terms without parole for first-degree murder and four consecutive sentences of 25 years to life for second-degree murder. As he was led out of court, Judge Mazzei ordered deputies to remove Heuermann immediately, prompting applause from those in attendance who had been affected by the case.
